Frugal Tip: Lead By Example
Thursday, July 2nd, 2009Tuesday was my son’s 5th birthday. In a few birthday cards from relatives, he was given cash. All of which he called “dollars”. And then he held them up excitedly and said “Now I can spend!”
When questioned further, his spending plan was simply cookies, because apparently I don’t provide them often enough for the average 5-year-old’s tastes (a good thing in my book), but it gave rise to me thinking about how I communicate my ideas and feelings about money to my children, and how I can do a better job of showing them, by example instead of by words, our relationship with money.
So as I plan how to entertain a 5-year-old on a grocery shopping trip in a fun yet informative way (and think about how many cookies I will actually allow him to buy), consider how your actions reflect your values to those around you who need the guidance the most.
