106th Festival of Frugality

Happy New Year! This very special 106th New Year Festival of Frugality is hosted by Pinyo at Moolanomy and features seven Editor’s picks of the dozens of entries:

  1. Spend less than you earn - the wrong way to think @ brip blap — Shares his great philosophy and awesome ideas on how to earn more money. I’ll definitely have to give some of his ideas a try.
  2. Are You an Overbuyer or an Underbuyer? What Do You Plan to Do About It? @ I’ve Paid For This Twice Already… — This was a guest post written by Mrs. Micah. So are you an overbuyer or an underbuyer? I think I am a “just-about-right-buyer”.
  3. 12 Frugal Things You Can Do This Week @ Being Frugal — Shares 12 money saving ideas that can save nearly $4,000 a year. The best part about these ideas is that they are not that hard, and I am sure everyone can find at least one useful idea.
  4. Save a Bundle of Money, Get in Shape, and Help the Environment in One Step @ Free Money Finance — Riding bicycle to work once a week to save money, get in shape, and reduce your carbon footprint. I wish I could do it. I just can’t imagine myself riding my bike in suit and tie.
  5. Money Saving Monday Tip#20 - Keep the change @ Gather Little By Little — Shares how his family values every penny, and how small change gathered little by little can turn into a big chunk of money.
  6. Wear a wide brimmed hat and retire extremely early @ Early Retirement Extreme — Presents the ultimate guide to frugality. Interesting read.
  7. Frugal Vacation Tips @ Ask Mr Credit Card — Shares 5 great tips on how to spend less on any vacation — not just Disney.

It’s a very entertaining festival with great pictures, you can re-celebrate last night all over again!

Cash Money Life plays hosts next week so please get your entries in as soon as you can.

105th Festival of Frugality: Holiday Edition

FIRE Finance brings us the 105th Festival of Frugality this week with a nice festive theme since it is the holidays.

Here are FIRE’s editor’s picks:

Next week the Festival goes on hiatus for Christmas and picks up with a special New Years Day edition hosted by Pinyo of Moolanomy so please get your entries in if you got them!

104th Festival of Frugality - Swedish Edition

Plonkee plays host for the 104th Festival of Frugality (though due to a rounding error by Lazy Man, we’re still one off the actual number!). Plonkee, ever the internationalist, did it in the theme of the beautiful Swedes in celebration of St. Lucia day, which pretty much means you get a interesting factoid with every category. For example, did you know that “Despite being officially neutral throughout the second world war, Sweden granted asylum to all Danish Jews who sought asylum there. Most of them escaped via small boats and survived the war in Sweden.”

Plonkee did have a few editor’s picks but I scanned through and here were mine:

Next week FIRE Finance plays host and we are accepting submissions at this form over at BlogCarnival. Happy Holidays!

Lazy Man Presents 102nd Festival of Frugality

Lazy Man and Money hosts this week’s 102nd Festival of Frugality (it was supposed to be the 103rd, but who’s counting) a whopping nine posts made the editor’s choice. From those, I selected the coordinator’s choice from the editor’s choice list and these are:

  • Dong warns us that you shouldn’t skimp on toilet paper. For me, the difference in price between a nice roll of Charmin and a crappy bulk purchased Costco one-play is too small for the tradeoff. Quote of the festival: “Life’s too short, and butt cheeks too sensitive to expose to thin grainy toilet paper.”
  • Cheap Healthy Good has some great tips for buying appliances on the cheap. It’s a step by step guide that is a must read before you buy any appliances this holiday season.
  • This one is less about frugality but is a message spendthrifts should take to heart: That good feeling you get after buying something doesn’t last.

There are plenty of great posts in this Festival so please check them out. Next week, Plonkee across the pond will host the Festivals and you can submit your entries here.

Cheap Healthy Good Hosts #102 Festival of Frugality

Cheapy Healthy Good was this week’s host and guide for the 102nd Festival of Frugality: Mix Tape Edition! That’s right, each post is paired up with a song and this ranks up there with one of the more creative hosting efforts I’ve seen. Who made the top three editor’s picks?

  • My Personal Finance Odyssey channels former GE head honcho Jack Welch for Make Your Finances Six Sigma. Super creative twist on an oft-mined subject. (set to the tune “Taking Care of Business” by Bachman-Turner Overdrive).
  • Inside Montana expounds on the beauty of simple, homemade cleaning products in At Home Naturally. Invaluable tips and (dear god) a recipe for sweet potato cornbread included herein. (this song was “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin)
  • U.K. native Monevator discusses relationships and cold, hard cashola in How Talking About Money is Like French Kissing. Featuring the greatest first line in all of blogdom. (Rated PG-13) (“Money Changes Everything” by Cyndi Lauper is the mix tape for this gem)

Next week our host will be Lazy Man so please get your entries in fast and furiously!

Festival of Frugality #99

I’ve Paid For This Twice Already is our week’s host for the 99th Festival of Frugality and cleverly decided to take the panel approach to showcasing this week’s posts. There were nine top scholars, ten teaching us what is frugality and what isn’t, eight enlightening us to some general tips, three talking about cooking, two on parties, nine sharing secrets on shopping, one solitary article on budgeting, two tackling health and wellness, fourteen on saving money, with three frugal creators rounding out the festival. Whew!

My top three from the festival were:

  • “Melissa shows us what it means to be frugal but not cheap with Saving Money But Losing Touch at A Penny Closer.” This was one of Paid Twice’s top picks as well and I enjoyed it because it talks about the human side of being frugal, how Melissa and her friend hadn’t met up in a while because her friend wanted to help her out by not compelling her to spend. Being frugal is important but maintaining those valuable relationships is just as important, great post Melissa.
  • Did you know that November was National Adoption Month? I didn’t. ‘Grace explains from her own experience Adoption on the Cheap at GRACEful Retirement. She’s adopted several children and not spent a dime doing so.” If you’re considering adoption, reading this post is a must because it explains some of the potential programs out there that may help you along the way. It’s weird to talk about frugality and adoption, but this post does a great job explaining the various programs.
  • We’ve been cooking from recipes on AllRecipes lately so this post from Kris on how to analyze a recipe and adjust it accordingly by Kris at Cheap Healthy Good was very appropriate. Incidentally, Kris, I would never listen to Megdoodle from Monkeybutt, Kentucky (See Tip #5).

Next week the auspicious and celebratory 100th Festival of Frugality goes to none other than Dawn at Frugal for Life and she’s specially requested this special 100th edition a few months ago. So, please submit your best frugal post of the week because you do not want to miss out.

96th Festival of Frugality

The fine folks at FIRE Finance have put up the 96th Festival of Frugality, a very healthy sampling of the past week’s frugal goodness. There were nine editors pick and of those, the ones I enjoyed the most were:

95th Festival of Frugality at My Retirement Blog

My Retirement Blog hosted the 120th Carnival of Personal Finance last week and then hosted the 95th Festival of Frugality this week, it must have been a busy week! This week the number of posts was staggering but they were categorized into meaningful sections for your reading enjoyment. The top submissions were:
