Frugal Tip: Don’t Be Sucked In By Hype
I live in a small midwestern city without a lot of flash or fanfare. And even so, somehow it seems half the people I know have iPhones. We don’t live in a wealthy area (our median home price is about $140,000) yet the amount of gizmos, gadgets, and electronics I am surrounded with is amazing to me.
My spouse is a computer programmer, and lives much more in the “tech” world than I do. He’s even more surrounded with gadgets, and this week he’s at a work-related conference in California, and he told me last night on the phone that a big segment of the conference has been devoted to integrating their technology with the iPhone – the wave of the future.
There are people who absolutely need iPhones. However, before you go out and buy the latest gadget and tie yourself to a long term cell phone contract to make it work, really evaluate if the tecnological abilities of an iPhone are a necessity for your life. And this extends beyond iPhones – much of the time, people get caught up in the hype of something new without really looking at how necessary it is for them.
Don’t believe the hype. Although i will admit I am sorely tempted to get myself an iTouch. Me and my internet addiction…
