Frugal Tip: Free or Almost Free Prescriptions

Earlier this week, I took my daughter in to the doctor for a checkup and found out she had an ear infection.  The pediatrician prescribed Amoxycillin, and then proceeded to tell us the places we could get it filled for free or for only $4.  If we went to our normal pharmacy and filled it through our insurance, it would have been about $12.

This is a program I had heard about but I hadn’t given much thought to,  since the only regular prescription our family has is not a generic drug and right now has no generic equivalent, I hadn’t thought about the reduced prescription prices for generics applying to us.  If my pediatrician hadn’t reminded me of the program, I would have gone to my normal pharmacy and paid more for it - instead I went to one of the places where the prescription was filled for free.  And it was completely free, no insurance or questions asked.

So if you are getting a new prescription filled, or have a generic option for a prescription you have, look into where you might be able to get it filled for a reduced price or even free.  We went to Meijer, a grocery chain in the midwest, but Target, Kroger, and Walmart also participate, as well as many others.

In most markets where there is a Publix grocery store, you can get antibiotics for free. I hear their advertisements at least four or five times a week while I’m driving and I have gotten antibiotics for free from Publix for one of my little ones.
